I love this scene.

Wow. Brave looks much more realistic than Pixar’s previous films.

What’s sad about the Brave comment is that there are so few heroic women in mainstream movies that they are inevitably compared to one another.

I’ve heard a lot of “Oh, Mulan in Scotland” or “Look, Eowyn is animated” comments. I can’t decide if they are intended in jest or derision. Maybe both?

Women as warriors is clearly still seen as aberrant, so they get lumped into a category, whereas “white guy hero” movies don’t draw the same scrutiny. I hear a lot of “Oh, another strong fighting chick. blah blah seen it.” yet nobody goes “Oh, look. ANOTHER skinny white guy saved everyone. How original.”
